Volunteer tutors work one-to-one with adult Bergenfield residents who wish to learn the English language. Tutors who have more than one student at the same level, work with them in a small group. ALL tutoring is done in the library during regular library hours.
While teaching, the tutors learn new cultures and acquire a new understanding of the intricacies of their own language.
A teaching degree is not necessary, just compassion and an understanding of the needs of our friends from different countries who need to learn English in order to make a better life for themselves and their families.
In addition to one-to-one tutoring, tutors volunteer their time at the Conversation Group sessions held in the library for STUDENTS WHO ARE REGISTERED IN THE PROGRAM.
The Bergenfield Library has an extensive ESL collection of printed materials, books, audio cassettes, and videos to learn the English language. The library has teaching materials for tutors as well. Computer software is also available for tutors and students to use with their lessons.
For further information or to volunteer as a tutor, call the ESL Program Coordinator at (201) 387-4040 Ext. 837.
